Four 7-Eleven convenience stores in the Orlando area were raided by agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on January 10, 2018. These raids were part of a nationwide crackdown on more than 100 stores that resulted in 21 arrests across the U.S. An ICE spokesperson stated that there were no arrests in the Central Florida area. Individuals who are detained by ICE should seek the help of a qualified Orlando immigration lawyer as soon as possible to ensure their right to remain in the U.S. legally.
A Pattern of Increased Enforcement
The raids by ICE are the result of an investigation conducted in 2013 by the agency in which nine separate 7-Eleven franchise owners and managers were charged with hiring undocumented workers for their stores and creating false identities. ICE checked employment records and performed interviews during the most recent round of raids, which may represent a new strategy on the part of the agency and the Trump administration.
A Crackdown on Undocumented Immigrants
Over the past year, Orlando has seen a significant increase in ICE activity. This crackdown on illegal immigration has taken a toll on many people who came to this country in search of a better life for themselves and their families and who now face the real risk of deportation even as they try to resolve their immigration issues. Working with a knowledgeable and experienced Orlando immigration lawyer is often a good first step toward remaining in the U.S. legally and achieving the right to live and work in the state of Florida.
