Orlando City Commissioners Adopt Trust Act to Protect Immigrants

Trust Act

In a unanimous vote taken on July 23, 2018, the city commissioners of Orlando approved a resolution to protect the rights of immigrants. Known as the Trust Act, the resolution prevents city officials, including police officers, from asking immigrants about their legal status during interactions in Orlando. This resolution received support from immigration advocates throughout the city and the surrounding areas.

Protecting Victims of Crime

The new resolution strengthens protections already on the books for undocumented immigrants in Orlando, which has historically been sympathetic to these vulnerable individuals and families. One important benefit of the resolution is the increased confidence it is expected to provide for immigrants who have been victims of crime. By preventing police officers and other Orlando city officials from questioning residents about their immigration or citizenship status, Orlando city officials hope to encourage undocumented immigrants to come forward and report crimes without fear of negative consequences.

Added Protections for Those Most at Risk

Both legal and undocumented immigrants have been targeted by federal agencies under strict enforcement policies set forth by the Trump administration. By strengthening the protections available to individuals in Orlando, city commissioners have made a strong statement indicating that they are willing to protect the rights of vulnerable individuals who might otherwise be at risk. Undocumented immigrants are frequently targeted by criminals who believe that these individuals and families will not be willing to go to the police. The adoption of the Trust Act will ensure the safest environment for families in our area.
