Fake Dates Cause Chaos in Immigration Courts

Immigration in Orlando

Last month, more than 1,000 immigrants from all over the U.S, arrived at immigration court hearings in major cities that were announced to take place on January 31. But the date set for the country-wide hearings was false, so the hearings didn’t take place because they were non-existent. The cities’ court employees tried to deal with, and help the influx of anxious immigrants waiting at all the courthouses to attend the non-existent court hearings, to the best of their abilities, but they fell short.

Immigration attorneys said they found out the January 31 date was false when they tried to confirm the hearing date with the courts, the night before the hearings were supposed to be held. Attorneys have noticed a trend of fake dates being issued to immigrants by the U.S. Immigration Department. The false January 31 hearing date on the Notice To Appear (NTA) ordering every immigrant to attend non-existent hearings, is the latest example. The federal agency blames the recent issuing of the false hearing date on the government shutdown.

Migrants are feeling apprehensive about the issuances of false hearing dates. Over two-thirds of them don’t have legal representation, so they don’t know about the non-existent court hearings until after they show up. Some of them travel many miles to get there, only to be turned away and achieve nothing toward their immigration status. To consistently receive fake dates on the NTAs, could cause the migrants to become distrustful of the immigration system. They may not show up for the actual court hearings, which can cause immediate removal proceedings to occur, regardless of how many uninterrupted years the immigrant has lived in the U.S.
