Showing compassion for the less fortunate and for the stranger is a tenet of most major religions. Spiritual leaders throughout the Orlando area have joined forces to ask U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and other politicians to support the immigration proposal put forward by President Trump or to come up with an alternative plan that could provide undocumented immigrants with a viable pathway to citizenship.
Dreamers and DACA
Recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, also known as Dreamers, are typically the children of undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as minors. DACA made it possible for these individuals to remain in the country to pursue educational and work opportunities while taking steps to correct their immigration status through legal channels. In many cases, DACA recipients have enlisted the help of an Orlando immigration lawyer to provide support during this process.
Failed Efforts to Protect Dreamers
The Trump immigration plan put forward in January 2018 would provide a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million Dreamers. In return, Trump’s proposal would require a $25 billion investment in building a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico and in enforcing stricter immigration policies nationwide. The bill failed to make it through the U.S. Senate. An alternative plan was presented in February 2018, which also failed to gain adequate support in the Senate.
A Call to Arms
Religious leaders are now calling for Senator Nelson and other members of the U.S. House and Senate to move forward with immigration legislation that can provide adequate protection and a pathway to legal residency and eventual citizenship for undocumented immigrants, including Dreamers. These appeals reflect growing popular support for allowing Dreamers to remain in the U.S. In the meantime, however, consulting with a qualified Orlando immigration lawyer is still the best way for undocumented individuals in our area to protect their legal rights in the current political environment.
