A couple from Silicon Valley has raised over $5 million to reunite immigrant families through a fundraising campaign on Facebook. This constitutes the largest fundraising effort ever achieved on the social media network and highlights the public controversy surrounding the forced separation of immigrant parents and children by agents of the Border Patrol and of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
An Initial Appeal for $1,500
Dave and Charlotte Willner created the fundraiser on June 19, 2018, as a way of raising $1,500 for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) in Texas. RAICES offers legal support for immigrants in the state of Texas. The initial $1,500 goal was intended to provide bond fees for one parent to ensure that they could retrieve their child from the government while they waited for their immigration hearing date. With more than $5 million raised and delivered to RAICES so far, the impact is likely to be much greater for immigrant families.
The Financial Resources to Make a Difference
The Willners are not the only couple involved in fundraising on behalf of immigration support. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have also made major contributions to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and have urged their supporters to offer smaller donations on behalf of immigrants. According to Teigen, the campaign has raised over $1 million in donations for the ACLU. By contributing to these fundraising campaigns, individuals and families can express their disagreement with the policies of the Trump administration in a positive and practical way.
Fighting Back Against Heartless Policies
The funds raised through these campaigns can allow endangered families to seek legal counsel and to take steps to regain custody of their children from the U.S. government. For families in our area, working with an experienced Orlando immigration lawyer can be a solid step toward resolving any visa issues and reducing the risk of negative enforcement actions by ICE.
