Research compiled from numerous studies has demonstrated that the presence of undocumented immigrants does not increase the crime rate, even in areas where high concentrations of these individuals are present. This runs counter to the rhetoric of the Trump administration and politicians who support its stance on immigration. The facts, however, do not support these allegations against undocumented immigrants.
Four Studies Refute Picture of Immigrants as Criminals
A report released by National Public Radio (NPR) cited four separate studies that found no evidence that immigrants were responsible for higher rates of crime than the general population.
- A study published in the May 2018 issue of Criminology found that despite increased undocumented immigration since 1990, the rate of violent crime has actually decreased during the same time period.
- The American Journal of Public Health published a related study in August 2017 that indicated that rates of drug arrests and overdoses and DUI incidents also did not increase because of increased numbers of undocumented immigrants in the areas studied.
- The Cato Institute also conducted a study in the state of Texas in 2015 that found that undocumented immigrants in these areas were actually less likely to be arrested or convicted of violent crimes than their native-born counterparts.
- Migration Letters, a journal based in the United Kingdom, published a research paper earlier this year that found that youthful undocumented immigrants were responsible for fewer crimes than legal immigrants or native-born individuals of the same age range.
These studies effectively refute the arguments made by immigration opponents that attempt to paint undocumented immigrants as criminals. By presenting the public with the real facts about immigrants to our country, it may be possible to counter the false claims made by those with an axe to grind against illegal and legal immigration to the U.S.
