21 Savage Taken Into Custody by ICE and May Face Deportation

U Visa

Federal immigration authorities took rapper 21 Savage into custody on Sunday, February 3, 2019. According to officials of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Savage had overstayed his visa by more than 10 years and had been convicted of drug charges in 2014. 21 Savage was nominated for a Grammy award this year but was unable to attend the ceremony because of his detention by ICE. Sources close to the rapper indicate that 21 Savage applied for a U Visa in 2017. Backlogs and delays in the immigration system, however, may have delayed the issuance of this visa for the popular musician.

Savage Accused of Overstaying His Visa

A statement released by ICE indicated that 21 Savage, also known as Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, is a citizen of the United Kingdom and entered the country legally in 2005. He failed to depart the U.S. in accordance with the terms of his visa, which expired in July 2006. Since that time, he has been in violation of federal immigration law. ICE also noted that 21 Savage was convicted of felony drug charges in October 2014. Savage has been detained in Georgia while deportation proceedings begin against him.
