Rubio Sponsors Bill to Extend Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan Refugees

Temporary Protected Status

A bill introduced in the U.S. Senate may offer new hope for Venezuelan refugees who are seeking asylum in this country. Marco Rubio introduced the bill on December 13, 2018, along with three Democratic co-sponsors. Rubio’s bill would provide these immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and would allow them to find a home in the U.S. after fleeing dangerous conditions in their home country.

A Bipartisan Effort

Rubio was accompanied by three Democratic senators during his introduction of the bill. Senators Dick Durbin, Patrick Leahy and Bob Melendez also spoke on behalf of the new bill, which would provide a pathway to asylum for Venezuelans fleeing the “economic, humanitarian, security, and refugee crisis” currently experienced by residents of this South American country. While the bill must still be debated and passed in both houses of Congress, the introduction of this piece of legislation will provide added hope for Venezuelans on their way to this country and those who are already here.

Untenable Conditions in Venezuela

According to the bill introduced by Rubio and his fellow senators, Venezuela is currently experiencing critical shortages of food and medicine as well as unchecked crime and a campaign of repression by Venezuela’s government. Many of these issues are the result of extreme inflation and the near-collapse of the Venezuelan economy. The International Monetary Fund has released estimates that indicate that inflation in Venezuela could reach 1,000,000 percent this year. Malnutrition among adults and children is commonplace, with an estimated 300,000 children at risk of starvation in the near future.
